November Adventures

This November we had a ton of fun after moving into Tyson's parents house. Fall came and Jayde loved jumping in the leaf piles her Papa made. She made a new friend Stella who is her nanny's daughter, and her and Colt adjusted very well with going over there a few hours every day.

We got our first huge snow storm, and watched "Bambi and Bambi's Mamma" walk around the backyard and eat the apples we left out for them. I helped Jayde make her first snowman, and we played follow the leader in snow tracks because the snow was so deep. Jayde even face planted off the swings into about 2 feet of snow and I scooped her up while she was laughing away. I loved how much she loved the snow, because it was technically her first time really remembering playing in it.

 Jayde learned what Hot Chocolate was, and absolutely loved the stuff! Below are some fun pics of Colt while we were waiting for Tyson to pick up some Pie Pizza. I just can't get enough of those kissable huge cheeks! Jayde wanted in on some of the action and took some funny pictures of herself on my phone.

We did some fun baking, and the power went out one night which Jayde loved. She played around with the flash lights and lanterns while she ate dinner. Tyson was very excited that football season started so we wouldn't have to drive up so far to go to the games.

It's Spring!

And Jayde loves being pushed around super fast in this Costco baby wipes box.
It's so fun pushing her all over the house and just hear her giggles.
She holds tightly onto the side of the box while we're whizzing all over.
I'm sure she also enjoys my fast car sounds... and the beeps as we back up.
One day I'm sure she'll think I'm crazy, but for now she enjoys me just the way I am!

It's Spring here in St George and we're loving it!
Our back yard doesn't have any walls or fences so Jayde can see what's happening in a lot of the neighborhood.
She will look up at the sky when she hears an airplane pass by not knowing where the sound is coming from.
We are getting her used to wearing her sunglasses for when we go to California this week.
Hopefully she'll keep them on!

they tell me that we live in a desert...

...and this is what happened twice this winter!

St. George is very desert-ey and unnaturally hot in the summer. Just looking at the large red rock mountains makes me thirsty.

Who would have suspected that this would happen here, let alone twice in one winter.

The second time it snowed it stayed on the ground for a few weeks because it wasn't warm enough to melt it.

It was fun watching the neighbor kids make big snowmen by collecting snow from other people's yards to contribute to their creations.

Even though they may never have an official 'Snow Day' off of school, it will be fun to play in with Jayde when she is bigger.

picking pumpkins

We went to pick our pumpkins this year at a local pumpkin patch. The man that owns it is 90+ years old, and he grows pumpkins every year. I made sure everyone got their own for carving so we could do a pumpkin carving contest (which was before I heard that Darryl was amazing at carving them...so we'll see how everyone holds up)!

So I guess it's officially Fall.

{Our loot}

{love the fact that I just noticed Tyson's shirt matches the pumpkins...wonder if he did that on purpose!}

October Weekends

I made this Reeses cake for Tyson's uncle who turned 50 and we had a surprise party at the house for him. It was a chocolate cake with reeses actually baked inside. The best part was the outside with the dark chocolate peanut butter frosting (that complimented the milk chocolate), and reeses all over...messy but totally delish!

We also went 'off roading' with our friends Tyler and Jackie to get sights of the fall leaves a few weekends back which was a blast. It was nice being all warm and cozy in the truck while we bounced all over the freezing cold wilderness. You have to admit that Utah is gorgeous.

After trucking we ate at this amazing Mexican restaurant with the best, absolutely to-die-for churros I've ever had, and I don't even really like churros!

September 30, 2009

So what kind of weather do you think of when you think of the last day of September? My whole life I've grown up in a place where you can wear shorts and flip flops all year round. We never had to wear coats when Trick-or-Treating and were able to show off our costumes in their full glory.

Never did I think I would be able to say that it snowed in September. It didn't stick but just the thought of it makes me cringe. What happened to my glorious summer?! It's now gone, and I'm missing it like crazy. I didn't want to make myself admit that it was now Fall, but I guess you just can't go against nature or it will bite you in the butt when you're not looking and will make itself snow in September just to laugh at your reaction. Oh well...there's always next year.

{Picture of these dreadfully HUGE snowflakes taken of the backyard on: September 30th, 2009. I must say, that's just not right in my book.}

DC in bloom

Tyson and I went on a date night to the Cherry Blossoms last week. I got off work a little early (LOVE my job), and he was done with class. We hadn't seen them at all this year and I was really worried that they would be all gone because of the rainy weather lately and the peak season was past. We took the metro over to the Jefferson Memorial and saw a few sparse trees attempting to still hold tight to their blossoms. As we walked up further we realized there were more blossoms still there than we originally thought. It was a gorgeous day, and I am so glad we went when we did to see the blossoms at their last stages. We took a few shots and kept walking around to take it all in. It was kind of sad and surreal to think how this will be the last time we will see these gorgeous blossoms for a very long time, but we feel really lucky to have experienced them at all. Here are some of our shots.

When we were walking back to the metro we were starving and opted for a vendor hot dog. After she gave us the dogs she said it we owed $10! Are you kidding? When did those prices go up, I've never had a hot dog on the mall for 5 bucks. I thought she was crazy but we paid up and they were actually pretty good which made me feel a little better about the steep price. We took the metro to the Pentagon City Mall and people watched while we shared a malt and fries. It was fun to be able to laugh and joke around with each other without any stress. I haven't had enough Tyson time lately with finals coming up so I'm glad to have that whole afternoon with him all to myself. Thank you Tyson for the wonderful date night, you're the best! Good luck with your last finals!

Seasons = Totally Overrated

So I decided that I am going to let my opinion of the seasons make an appearance on our blog because of our current weather situation. Here in DC it is cold...very cold. Mind you, it isn't nearly as cold as Cleveland but that is a complete other experience that I try to block out of my memory ;0)

Most of the people I hang out with are from Utah and LOVE the seasons. They say things such as, "How sad that you grew up in California without seasons! I couldn't live without experiencing seasons." I don't know if it is just my fellow Californians that feel this way or not, but my friend's hubby posted about it on their blog also and feels the same way - so shout out to the Carr's in Ohio.

Here are my thoughts: There are millions of people around the world (mostly in the middle part) who live long wonderful lives without much in the way of seasons. In fact, just about all of the places that we routinely call ‘paradise’ are essentially seasonless. Growing up in southern California, I very much enjoyed the fact that our seasonal changes were mild and almost nonexistant and ignorable. This allowed me to pursue my hobbies, such as swimming and walking around outside in shorts and sandals, literally year-round.

Needless to say, I have mixed feelings about seasons now that I have experienced them to the fullest. I suspect that many a supposed season-lover secretly feels the same but just won't admit it. Why else would so many life-long East Coasters, upon reaching retirement, abandon their moherland for the balmy shores of Florida? But, you may say, many of them only go for the winter, which can be hard on the elderly. I might respond that it’s kind-of rude to talk about old people that way, and then tell you that that argument plays right into my hands.

Let's get to the heart of the matter and and take a close look at the East Coast seasons. Here’s what my analysis reveals:

Spring is actually just winter, with the addition of some desperate and foolishly optimistic flowers. It is constantly raining and still dreary.

Winter is long, dark, cold, and miserable. The only time winter is pretty is right after it snows, after that point it all becomes brown slush that soaks into everything...including the salt that gets all over everything. And not to mention having to drive in it! Oh, and the ice storms! I don't even want to go there.

Summer generally takes it’s sweet time getting here, and then when it does it’s infested with thunder storms and horrible humidity.

Fall brings mild weather and spectacular colors to the trees.

You are now thinking that these are interesting results. Most of the seasons are completely lousy at their worst, and not very good at their best. So, when people say things like, “I couldn’t live without my seasons,” what I think they’re really saying is, “I like Fall”. Fall is Mother Nature’s trump card. Just when folks are about to pack their bags and head south for good, Mother Nature breaks out her paint set and instead of leaving, the people stand there transfixed. Suddenly people start saying irrational things like, “see, that’s why I love seasons!” Slap some pretty colors on the forest for a month or so and the Seasons have bought themselves another year of loyalty.

Fall in out here is absolutely gorgeous. I regret not taking any pictures of this last fall while living here. Honestly, California has nothing like it but when winter drags on I can’t helping thinking that I’d much prefer to have the Great Pacific lapping at my toes, than Jack Frost nipping at my nose. Especially when Christmas is over and January trudges in because we all know that we still have a few more cold, snowy, bleak months ahead of us before rainy spring arrives and summer finally makes his appearance. My opinion is you can always hop on a plane to visit those beautiful trees and semi-fun snow, once you build your cute snowman you can hop right back on that plane and say "Hello Warm Weather, I'm back"!

Once there was a snowman, snowman, snowman

While we were in Utah it snowed...a lot. I figured that if you live in the cold, freezing, slushy, dreary weather then you NEED to build a snowman. If you don't then what's the point of even dealing with that weather? The family took a little bit more convincing than I thought they would (especially Tyson), but in the end they were excited to build one and it was a lot of fun. I've been trying to convince people since last year to do this. And don't we look great in the old snow gear?! I especially love Jessi's hot pink jumpsuit. Oh, and Darryl was there with the video camera taping us, and he helped us build the little guy's base by shoveling snow. If you click on the picture you can see it closer up (including Tyson's determined face). Fun times...fun times. I'll post more about our adventures in Utah this week.

DC Christmas Trees

During the Christmas season out here in our nations capital there are a lot of fun things to see. One of these is the National Christmas Tree which is right in-between the White House and the Washington Monument. They change up the decorations for these every year so of course we went, and it didn't disappoint. All around the area are other individual trees that represent each state, and a really cool train set. It was freezing cold when we went, but still pretty fun.

Capital Christmas Tree which doesn't even come close to the National Christmas Tree! But it was still fun to get a picture of it in front of the capital.

There's a storm a-brewin'

Well I just walked into our apartment and someone had slipped a piece of paper under our door. It says, and I quote "As many of you are aware, the National Weather Service has issued a storm watch saying the remnants of tropical storm Hanna are expected to affect the region on Saturday. This means excessive winds and rainfall could occur. We ask that you please begin making plans for your personal safety.

  • Should there be a loss of power, DO NOT burn candles. Instead, use flashlights and battery operated lanterns. If there were a gas leak due to the storm, open flames are dangerous and not recommended.

  • Have towels available to place in your window sills and at the bottom of all exterior doors. Blowing rain can enter in these areas and damage your belongings.

  • Please bring all items in from your balcony if/before the winds pick up to avoid others being hurt by flying objects."
I then proceeded to get two picture texts from my wonderful husband of what he is currently seeing at the moment.... Yes my friends...my husband is currently in LA, relaxing at the beach...without me. So while I brave the storm and keep an eye out for flying objects from people's balcony's my thoughts will go out to him, his warm weather, and beautiful palm trees. Actually I'm glad that he is able to go to the beach today. He flew out for an interview in LA and had some time to kill. He has been working so hard with school and his job, he deserves a little bit of relaxation. Just want to send a shout-out to my wonderful husband who is working so hard to make us have a great life after law school! Love you babe! Oh...and I decided that if he gets a call-back, I am definately going with him next time!

CHERRY BLOSSOMS

Yesterday Tyson and I we went on "The Mall" with the Takos Family to see the last little bit of the Kite Festival and the Cherry Blossoms because they were in peak this weekend. It was Great weather to fly kites, and it reminded me of my days trying to get the dang things up in the air... It never really worked for me because of my short legs... I just couldn't Ever run fast enough. They had some pretty cute ones up in the air when we got there.

The Cherry Blossoms were my Favorite! I had never seen them before, and didn't know what a real treat I was in for. As we were making our way through the crowds towards the Jefferson Memorial I was trying to take pictures of the trees around us and getting a little bit frustrated that the people in our group were moving so fast...I didn't want to miss the trees.
They all laughed and told me that the trees we were seeing were Nothing compared to the ones we were going to. As we walked toward the Tidle Basin all I saw were these Gorgeous Cherry Blossom trees...all over the place!!! It was amazing. We continued to push our way through the crowds, and got some really cute pictures. Needless to say I was amazed. I decided when we get a home I definitely want to plant one of those trees in our yard.

For Dinner that that night we went to a Brazillian Barbeque restaraunt by Potomac Mills with Sean and Lacey Stanley. It is my favorite style of food and was really good. If you have never had fried bananas you are really missing out!! After dinner we headed over to their totally cute apartment and watched Dan in Real Life. If you have seen it once and didn't really enjoy it, watch it a second time...you will have a completely different outlook. Tyson and I liked it the second time around Much Better! Needless to say, it was a GREAT weekend!!
