you can lead a toddler to food... but you can't make them eat...

Jayde's eating habits have always been interesting. She would only nurse for about 4 minutes on one side and be done, weaned herself from nursing at around 7 months, loved baby food and then decided one day that she wouldn't ever touch it again (and didn't), and does not like trying new things (unless it looks like chocolate... which we don't have much of I promise).

Apparently when she's not with her 'mama' she will try new things though - like this salsa at a local restaurant when she went with her Nana and Papa while Tyson and I were at the temple. It's like when we're at Costco and she constantly naggs me to get her out of the cart (which I never do), but when I'm not there she's an angel. It's so funny.

Currently Jayde's favorite foods she will eat are: eggs, ham, bagels w/cream cheese, chicken pot pies, mac-n-cheese, hot dogs, multi-grain cheerios, pretty much any fruit, waffles, french toast, pb&j sandwiches, yogurt, oatmeal, pancakes, ham & cheese sandwiches, and veggie muffins.

Foods she refuses to even try are: pizza, chicken nuggets, beans, rice, any sort of chicken or casserole, salad, tomatoes (unless it's in salsa form and she's with her grandparents, not us), any sort of fish, soup, and most veggies I've presented to her.

Whenever we try to get her to try a new food her, mouth becomes a clamp and shuts until we stop asking her to take a bite, then she generally gets very annoyed with us and refuses to eat all together. One thing that has semi-worked to get her to try something is have her help us prepare the food (like spaghetti), and let her try while we're cooking it. The funny thing is she will generally take one bite and refuse to eat any of 'new' food we just prepared when we put it on her plate.

We then end up letting her sit there while we eat the dinner and get her out when we're done. Then before bed (or when she says she's hungry) we'll give her something we know she will eat so she doesn't go hungry. That way she's still getting food, but doesn't think that we're going to make her a separate dinner when she refuses to eat what we've initially given her.

If anyone has any tips for helping toddlers eat new foods or any fun healthy recipes you might have that your toddler loves please let me know! I'm hoping to get more veggies and meat into her diet which now basically consists dairy, carbohydrates, and fruit.

Sounds like she is doing pretty good for a toddler. My first boy was super picky! But he is now 5 and eats good, my second is 2 and pretty much only eats milk and chocolate mini wheats :) But he is healthy! She will come around! Keep trying
